NL Industries Announces Executive Changes

HOUSTON, Jan. 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- NL Industries, Inc. (NYSE: NL) announced today that Robert D. Hardy, currently NL's Vice President, Controller, has been appointed to the additional position of Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer following the resignation of Susan E. Alderton. Mr. Hardy has worked at NL Industries and related companies for 14 years. He was Vice President and Director of Taxes until March, 1999, when he became Vice President, Controller of the Company. Mr. Hardy works at NL's headquarters in Houston, Texas.

Ms. Alderton announced her resignation as Vice President, Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer as a result of the Company's recent decision to close NL's New York office as part of ongoing cost reduction efforts. Ms. Alderton plans to seek other employment opportunities in the New York area where she resides. Ms. Alderton will remain with the Company for several weeks to assist with an orderly transition and to oversee closure of the New York office.

J. Landis Martin, President and CEO of NL, said, "Susan Alderton has been a highly valued member of NL's executive team and has served the Company well during her 16 year tenure. As CFO and Treasurer Susan has done an excellent job and we will all miss her. We wish her well in her new endeavors. Robert Hardy has worked closely with Susan over the last several years and I am sure the transition will be a smooth one. Robert, too, brings excellent skills to the job and has an in-depth knowledge of all of our operations."

NL Industries, Inc. is a major international producer of titanium dioxide pigments.
